Introducing our new music room at Bonterre

Thanks to the amazing generosity of the University of Worcester and Heart of Worcestershire College, we’ve transformed an unused shipping container into an inspiring music room for our students!

We’ve created a dedicated space where our young people, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and those navigating mental health challenges and experiences of trauma, can dive into the world of music.

An old shipping container from University of Worcester has had some fixing up and decoration with the help of our students, creating a space where they can make as much noise as they like!

Shortly after the container was ready, we received a donation from Heart of Worcester College of their old music technology equipment. The room is now fully kitted out with a range of instruments, mixers and studio gear.

Mike Stringer, Director at Bonterre CIC, said:

“For many of the young people we work with, music is a powerful outlet – it can calm, energise and communicate what words often cannot. These donations will allow us to introduce music into our work in a meaningful and accessible way. We are extremely grateful.”

Why is music so important for our students?

For many of the children we support who find traditional classroom settings tough, music offers a unique and powerful pathway to learning, expression, and healing:

  • A Safe Space for Expression: When words are difficult, music can provide an alternative outlet. It allows our students to express emotions, frustrations, and joys in a non-verbal way, helping them to process their feelings and communicate more freely.
  • Boosting Confidence and Self-Esteem: Mastering an instrument or creating a piece of music, no matter how simple, can be a huge confidence booster. It’s about personal achievement and discovering hidden talents, which is incredibly empowering.
  • Developing Key Skills: Music activities naturally enhance a range of skills. From improving concentration and memory to refining motor skills and coordination, the benefits are far-reaching.
  • Sensory Engagement and Regulation: Music can be incredibly regulating for children with sensory sensitivities. Whether it’s the calming rhythm of a drum or the stimulating sound of a keyboard, it can help them to find balance and focus.
  • Building Connections: Making music together fosters teamwork, listening skills, and a sense of belonging. It’s a fantastic way to build positive relationships and reduce feelings of isolation.
  • Reducing Anxiety and Stress: The therapeutic power of music is well-documented. Engaging with music can significantly lower stress levels, calm anxious minds, and create a joyful, positive atmosphere.

Our new music room will be a hub of creativity, discovery, and growth. It’s already a great hit with our students!

A huge, heartfelt thank you once again to the University of Worcester and Heart of Worcester College for their incredible donations and for supporting our mission. Your kindness is truly making a difference in the lives of young people across Worcestershire.
