We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve been selected to take part in the customer vote for a project with the Tesco Stronger Starts scheme!
Three groups in every community have been shortlisted to receive grant awards of up to £1500. Tesco customers can vote in store for the group they think should take away the top funding award in their local Tesco store. Please support us next time you shop at Tesco!
Bonterre will be one of the groups on the shortlist in the Worcester and Droitwich areas from the start of April, with our Project ‘Cookery on the Farm’. We want to run cookery workshops for children and young people on our farm site, helping them to understand where their food comes from and teaching skills in how to cook healthy and affordable meals.
There has been a sharp increase in food insecurity among children in the UK, with 4 million now living in households that struggle to provide access to a healthy diet. This puts them at high risk of suffering from diet-related diseases. Our cookery sessions will teach vital skills for children of different ages. For older children, we will cover practical skills they’ll need to go on to live independently, such as shopping to a budget and storing food safely. For younger children, we will focus on building their knowledge of nutrition and the importance of different food types, including getting their 5-a-day. Together with the children, we will harvest fruit and vegetables grown on site to use in the sessions, giving greater awareness and understanding of where their food comes from and how it’s produced.
We have seen first hand how cooking a meal from scratch for others generates a great sense of pride and achievement for children, boosting their confidence and enthusiasm and setting them up for a healthier future.
Voting is open in all Tesco stores from the start of April until the end of June. You can cast your vote using the blue token given to you at the check-out each time you shop. Thanks for your support!
